A ChatGPT alternative for file jobs that end in finished files
ChatGPT discusses your files. Uncomplex runs the job and hands back finished files. Free to run. See where ChatGPT is still the better pick.
One reads your files and talks it through with you. The other plans the steps, runs a script on your files, and delivers the result. Different shapes for different work.
The short version
Choose ChatGPT if
- The task needs understanding what's inside the files: summarize, compare, extract, categorize.
- You want to ask follow-ups and change direction mid-task.
- You already use it for everything else, and file work is one more thing.
- What you want back is an answer, not a file.
Choose Uncomplex if
- The job ends in a finished file: merged, renamed, converted, zipped.
- You're working in batches: up to 50 files and 200 MB in one task.
- You'd rather not hand file contents to a chat.
- You want free, with nothing to upgrade around.
Side by side
Checked on 7 Oct 2026. ChatGPT figures come from OpenAI's file-upload help page, listed at the bottom.
| ChatGPT | Uncomplex | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | A conversation about files | A task that ends in finished files |
| Reads file contents | Yes, by design: that's how it answers questions about them | Runs scripts on your files. Tasks that need the AI to read what's inside are refused, with an explanation and a runnable alternative |
| Biggest single file | 512 MB per file for documents and presentations; about 50 MB for CSVs and spreadsheets; 20 MB per image | 200 MB and 50 files per task |
| Batch, free plan | Free plan: 3 file uploads per day | 10 custom tasks per 5 hours; 50 files per task |
| Upload rate | Up to 80 files every 3 hours; limits may be lowered at peak hours | Not applicable: tasks, not uploads |
| What comes back | Answers in the conversation | Finished files to download |
| Storage | Shared upload storage capped at 25 GB per user and 100 GB per organization; files can be kept in Library separately from chats | Uploads purged after 24 hours (tasks) and 1 hour (public tools) |
| Plans | Free and paid, with file limits set per plan | Free. No paid plan exists. |
Where ChatGPT is the better pick
The job needs reading the contents. "Read this invoice and tell me what's missing." ChatGPT reads files by design: that's how it summarizes, compares and analyzes them (their help page, as of 7 Oct 2026). Uncomplex refuses those tasks by design and says why. When the work is about what's inside, it's the right tool.
Follow-ups. You can ask a follow-up and change direction. Uncomplex runs once and ends with "Run a new task."
Bigger single files. 512 MB per document against our 200 MB per task (their help page, as of 7 Oct 2026).
It's already in your day. If you live in it, file questions are one more thing you ask there.
Where Uncomplex is the better pick
Finished files, not homework. The task ends with your output files, ready to download. A conversation about a job still leaves you the doing.
Batches. Up to 50 files and 200 MB in one task. On ChatGPT's free plan, file uploads are limited to 3 per day (their help page, as of 7 Oct 2026).
Free is the whole product. No credit system, no plan tiers, no paid version to reach for.
The steps are a script. You describe the outcome once and a script does exactly that. Same job in, same job out. No checking whether the answer still matches your files.
Files and privacy
| ChatGPT | Uncomplex | |
|---|---|---|
| Reads contents | By design: required for it to answer questions about files (their help page) | Scripts run on your files; file contents don't go to the AI model for reasoning |
| Retention | Depends on where the file is stored and workspace settings. Library files are kept separately from conversations, and deleting a chat doesn't delete a Library file (their help page, as of 7 Oct 2026) | Browser tasks never leave your device. Cloud uploads deleted within 24 hours; public tools within 1 hour |
| What's logged | Their data use for model improvement depends on the service and your data settings (their help page) | Task descriptions, file counts and types, and outcomes. Never file contents |
When the task needs understanding what's inside, reading contents is the point, and ChatGPT is the right choice. Uncomplex is for jobs where structure is enough: names, columns, formats, sizes, order.
Pricing and limits
| ChatGPT | Uncomplex | |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free plan with file uploads, subject to plan-specific limits: 3 uploads per day, 5 files per project (their help page, as of 7 Oct 2026) | 10 custom tasks per 5 hours; 50 files and 200 MB per task |
| Paid | Free and paid plans with higher limits. We don't quote their prices here. Check openai.com for current figures | No paid plan exists |
Their limits move often, and their help page was updated the day before we checked it. Re-check before you rely on a number.
FAQ
What can't Uncomplex do?
It can't read or judge what's inside files: no invoice totals, no categorizing by meaning, no sorting photos by what's in them (it can sort by date, size or filename). No browsing, no logins, no clicking through apps. No PDF editing, signing, redaction or OCR. No mobile or desktop app. Limits: 10 custom tasks per 5 hours, 50 files and 200 MB per task.
Should I use ChatGPT or Uncomplex for my files?
If the task is about what's inside the files, use ChatGPT. If the task ends in a finished file (merged, renamed, converted, zipped, deduped), describe it once in Uncomplex and download the result. If you need both, use both.
Is Uncomplex really free?
Yes. There is no billing today: no plans, no card, no credits. The cap is 10 custom tasks per 5 hours. Custom tasks require sign-in, and everything on them is free; the single-purpose tools run without an account.
Does Uncomplex read my files?
Scripts read your files; the AI model doesn't receive their contents for reasoning. Browser tasks never leave your device. Cloud uploads are deleted automatically within 24 hours (1 hour for public tools).
What about other AI assistants?
We use ChatGPT as the best-known example and make no claims about the others. The file figures on this page come from OpenAI's own help page (checked 7 Oct 2026). If you evaluate another assistant, check its docs for its current limits.
